Worcester, Mass. (September 15) -- In its first dual match of the season, the Assumption College men's tennis team fell to Division I Holy Cross by a score of 4-3 on Monday. The Hounds were led by sophomore captain Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) who won the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-4 and also helped take the No. 1 doubles match 6-4.
Assumption kicked off the match by winning two of three doubles matches for the first point based on Division I scoring. Waung and fellow team captain Vilijami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) claimed the match 6-4 while sophomore Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and sophomore Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) won the No. 3 doubles match 7-6.
In the singles matches, Waung defeated Holy Cross' Jimmy Ye while Knight pulled out the only other singles win, in the No. 6 singles match, over the Crusaders' Elmar Lutz.
Sophomore Christian Zuber (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Saint Ignatius) also demonstrated a strong performance, dropping the first set of the No. 2 singles match by a score of 6-2, followed by a 6-3 win. It was Holy Cross' DeGregoris however, that ultimately claimed the win in a third set (10-6).
Sophomore Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) was also able to push the Crusaders to three sets. Zylak was swept in the first set of the No. 4 singles match by a score of 6-0 before rallying to take the second 6-2. In the third however, Zylak fell 10-7.
The Hounds are set to return to action on Sept. 27-29 when they travel to Queens College for the Wilson ITA East Regional Championship.
