Syracuse, N.Y. (September 20) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team (2-4, 2-2 NE-10) topped Le Moyne (2-5, 1-3 NE-10) on Saturday in their second-straight win of the season. Freshman duo Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) and Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) posted a shutout in the No. 2 doubles match en route to the win.
The Hounds swept doubles competition to start the day at Le Moyne and kept the momentum going strong throughout the singles matches.
In addition to Vila and Holland's win, sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) and junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) claimed an 8-2 win in the No. 3 doubles match while sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) took the No. 1 doubles match 8-5.
Assumption took five of six singles matches including three that pushed to three sets. In the No. 2 singles match, Burbine took the first set 6-2, but fell in the second 6-3 before earning the win in an intense 12-10 third set.
Riley fell 2-6 to the Dolphins' Dominique Canale in the first set of the No. 3 singles match but rallied to take set two 6-4 and then posted a shutout in set three, 6-0.
Junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) won the first set of the No. 4 singles match 6-4, dropped the second 6-4 before winning the third 7-6 after a tiebreaker.
Holland performed especially well in the No. 5 singles match, earning the sweep 6-0 and 6-1 while Lovejoy also swept her opponent in the No. 6 singles match 6-4, 6-2.
The Hounds will travel to Saint Rose on Sunday, Sept. 21 for their fifth NE-10 match up. Competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
