Woodbridge, Conn. (September 27) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team (4-5, 4-3 NE-10) topped New Haven (3-4, 3-4 NE-10) by a score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon, notching another NE-10 win on the season. Freshman and reigning NE-10 Rookie of the Week Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) went 2-0 on the day, sweeping the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-1 and claiming the No. 1 doubles match, along with partner Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington), 8-5.
The Hounds claimed all three doubles matches to get the competition started. In addition to Riley and Burbine's win at No. 1 doubles, freshman pair Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) and Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) took the No. 2 doubles match 8-3. It was the No. 3 doubles match however, that yielded the largest win margin. Sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. /Coyle-Cassidy) and junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) topped the Chargers' Sarah Burzin and Martha Petzoldt by a score of 8-1.
In singles play, two Hounds won in two sets, Burbine and Holland. Holland swept the No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Riley earned her win at No. 3 singles in three sets. After dropping the first 6-3, the sophomore fought back to take the second 7-5 and the third 10-8.
Also competing for the Hounds in singles competition was Vila, who dropped the No. 1 singles match in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 8-10) along with junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) (1-6, 4-6) and junior Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) (2-6, 6-7 (7) ).
The Hounds return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 1 when they travel to Merrimack for a 3 p.m. match.
