Box Score Pleasantville, N.Y. (January 28) -- Taking control from the opening minutes, the Assumption College men's basketball team picked up a 65-54 road win at Pace University on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Goldstein Center.
In the first half, the Hounds led by as many as 11 while forcing 12 Setter turnovers as junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) posted a team-best nine points in the opening period. Pace held a 12-11 lead with 13:46 on the clock before an 11-3 run that was capped by a Bobb-Jones dunk put the Hounds firmly in control at 22-15 with 7:47 left in the half.
The Setters used four points out of Kyle Pearson to close to within four at 25-21 at the 4:44 mark, but a 7-0 scoring spurt closed the half for Assumption as the Hounds took the 32-21 halftime lead. Assumption shot 43.8 percent from the field in the half while holding Pace to just a 38.1 shooting percentage over the first 20 minutes.
In the second, Assumption led by at least nine and by as many as 19 as the Hounds put the game out of reach. Leading by a 34-25 margin in the early going, Assumption used a 9-0 run that was capped by a three from junior Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) to seize the 43-25 advantage. The Hounds continued to hold the 18-point advantage after two free throws nearing the midway point of the half before the Setters made it a 47-35 margin on two free throws at the 8:50 mark. A 7-0 run that was capped by a hook by senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) pushed the lead to 54-35 with 6:14 on the clock as the Hounds came away with the eventual 65-54 victory over the Setters.
Junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale) led three Hounds in double figures with 17 points, while Bobb-Jones had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Aiken also finished in double figures with a 10-point evening.
Pearson was the game's leading scorer with a 19-point game for the Setters, along with 18 points from Shelton Mickell and 13 points by Khalil Brown. Assumption was strong on the defensive end in the win, forcing 17 Setter turnovers in the road victory.
With the win, Assumption improves to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in Northeast-10 play, while Pace drops to 5-16 overall and just 1-12 in the league.
Assumption is back in action on Saturday, January 31st as the Hounds host Southern Connecticut for a 3:30 p.m. start at Laska Gym.
