Worcester, Mass. (January 7) -- A layup by sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) with 11.2 seconds remaining lifted the Assumption College men's basketball team to a thrilling 47-46 home win over Saint Rose on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Hounds jumped out to an early 14-6 lead over the first six minutes, capped by a thunderous alley-oop dunk by junior Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle-Voc Tech) off a pass from junior Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va./Annandale). Assumption stretched the lead into double figures for the first time on a Ziegler baseline jumper and led by as many as 11 in the period at 24-13 following a layup by senior Jimmy Zenevitch (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic).
Saint Rose answered with a quick 9-0 run over a span of 3:58 that was capped by a three from Jack Jones to cut the lead down to just two at 24-22. Assumption made it a six-point lead again with just 1:34 on the clock before a putback basket by Jalaun Taylor with 42 ticks left made it a 28-24 halftime score.
Assumption shot 52 percent in the half while limiting the Golden Knights to 37 percent shooting from the field and holding a 17-12 advantage on the boards.
In the second half, Saint Rose took its first lead since the opening minute and stretched it out to four at 34-30 on a pair of free throws by Chris Dorgler. After a three from the corner by Jack Jones extended the lead to 39-34 with 5:55 remaining, the Hounds countered with a three from the hands of sophomore Marcus Murray (Washington, D.C./John F. Kennedy).
The Golden Knights grabbed their biggest lead of the game with 2:27 left after two free throws from Max Weaver before the Hounds mounted the game-winning rally. Bey cut the lead down to one with a free throw for the 44-41 deficit, followed by a forced turnover with 1:55 remaining as the Hounds turned up the defensive pressure. Assumption called timeout with 1:39 left and 19 on the shot clock and turned that into points as Bobb-Jones scored off the inbounds play to cut the lead down to just one at 44-43.
Saint Rose again made it a three-point game on a layup by Sam Eckstrom that was nearly blocked with 1:08 left, followed by a Ziegler jumper for the Hounds just 10 seconds later. With the margin sitting at just one point with under a minute left, the Hounds came out with strong defensive pressure and eventually forced a Saint Rose shot clock violation with 22.5 seconds remaining.
With the stage set for one final offensive possession, Bey converted the game-winning basket as he drove on the Golden Knight defense from the right side and laid the ball in off the glass for the one-point lead. Saint Rose was unable to get a shot off in time on the final possession as the Hounds picked up the one-point victory.
Ziegler was outstanding with his 20-point performance, along with 10 points from Bey and a game-high 10 rebounds from Bobb-Jones. For Saint Rose, Eckstrom led the team with 12 points off the bench and Jones added 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out of the game.
