-The lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated Franklin Pierce on the road by a score of 8-1 on Monday afternoon in a Northeast-10 match up. The match marks the third of three in a three-day period and marks back-to-back wins for the Hounds following a 6-3 victory over Saint Michael's on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Co-captains Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) and Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) earned a shutout over Sonia Rodrigues and Kara Brazel at No. 1 doubles, 8-0.
-Junior Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) and senior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to claim an 8-1 win over Franklin Pierce's Kirby Melbourne and Nicole Gilooly, helping to lead the Hounds into singles play with a 2-0 advantage.
-Sophomore Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) shut out Rodrigues 6-0, 6-0 at No.1 singles, making Burbine 5-3 in conference play.
-Black faced Brazel at No. 2 singles where she picked up a match for the Hounds, claiming the victory in a near perfect score of 6-1, 6-0.
-Four Hounds picked up the remaining four matches including sophomore Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) at No.3 singles, Lovejoy at No. 4, Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) at No.5 and Santina Marinelli (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) at No.6 singles, all sweeping their competition in two sets.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
-Lovejoy's win at No. 4 singles continues her undefeated streak in singles play in the Northeast-10 Conference, improving her record to 5-0.
-During Monday's match, Black made her first appearance at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles so far this season.
-Holland made her first appearance at No. 3 singles for the first time this season.
-Assumption ends their three days of consecutive matches 2-1, improving their conference record to 7-1.
