Liverpool, N.Y. (March 14) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team kicked off league play with an 8-1 victory over Le Moyne on Saturday on the road. 

With the win, the Hounds start the season 1-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference and improve to 4-4 overall, while the Dolphins drop to 5-6 (3-2 NE-10).

Assumption claimed two of the three doubles matches to begin the competition with a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) teamed up for an 8-6 victory over James Gayvert and Steven Procopio before sophomores Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) lost an 8-6 decision to Jason Barton and Stephane Legris at No. 2 doubles. 

Sophomores Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) and Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) claimed a win at No. 3 by default for the 2-1 edge.

Leung performed exceptionally well in singles competition, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Barton at No. 2 singles while Zylak and Knight also swept their competition at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Zylak topped Procopio 6-3, 6-4, while Knight shut out Adam Celata 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 singles, Waung dropped the first set 7-5 and fell behind in the second, 4-1, before the Dolphins' Gayvert retired from the match due to injury to award Waung the win. 

Sophomore Zack Slepchuk (Holyoke, Mass. / Saint Mary's) won the No. 6 singles match by default before Rahnasto earned a win at No. 3 in just one set, 9-7. Rahnasto's victory came after one set once the Hounds had earned enough points to capture the overall victory. 

Assumption is slated to take on Stonehill on Saturday, March 21, on the road for a 1 p.m. contest.
