Hilton Head, S.C. (March 2) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team opened its 2015 spring season on Monday with a 7-2 loss against Brevard at the Chaplin Park Tennis Club. Sophomore Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) led the Hounds on the day, claiming the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-1.
With the loss, the Hounds drop to 1-2 on the year while the Tornadoes improve to 2-2.
The Hounds claimed two singles matches on the day. Leung took the No. 2 match while sophomore Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) swept Richi Liell at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-1.
While Assumption ultimately fell in all three doubles matches, sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) were defeated by a narrow margin, pushing the No. 1 match to a 9-7 final. Laung and sophomore Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy), along with Knight and sophomore Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) both fell by a score of 8-4 at No. 3 and 4 doubles, respectively.
At No. 1 singles, Waung was defeated by David Taggart 6-0, 6-2 while Rahnasto fell 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Hodor also dropped a singles match, falling 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4.
In the No. 5 singles match, Zylak claimed the first set by a score of 6-4 before dropping the second 6-3, allowing Christoph Plasa to tie. Plasa ultimately earned the win in a 10-8 tiebreaker.
The Hounds are set to return to action on Tuesday, March 3, at Armstrong State at 2 p.m.
