Hilton Head, S.C. (March 4) -- The Assumption College women's tennis team notched its ninth win of the 2014-15 season on Wednesday in an 8-1 victory over Davis & Elkins College. The Hounds went into singles competition leading by a narrow 2-1 margin before rallying to take all six singles matches for the win.
With the victory, the Hounds improve to 9-9 on the season with just one match left, while Davis & Elkins drops to 1-3 on the season.
In doubles competition, both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches went to Assumption. Freshmen Aida Vila (Girona, Spain / La Salle Girona) and Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) topped Amanda Fewster and Sandra Chindalo 8-4 at No. 2 while sophomore Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) and junior Paige Palmero (Trumbull, Conn. / Lauralton Hall) earned a 9-8 (1) tiebreaker win at No. 3.
In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomore Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and freshman Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) fell to Julia Hoehn and Halima Michael by a score of 8-5.
The Hounds swept five of six singles matches including Vila's 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, Riley's 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 3 and Holland's 6-2, 6-0 success at No. 4. Also sweeping their singles matches was junior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon), who topped Rhiana Bruce-Lyle 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, as well as junior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) who shut out Marlene Ridgway 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
At No. 2 singles, Burbine claimed the first set 6-3 before dropping set two 7-6 after a 2-0 tiebreaker. The freshman came back to take set three 10-6 for the win.
Assumption has just one match left of its 2014-15 season on Friday, March 6, against Ashland University at 8 a.m. The match will also mark the finale of the the Hounds' spring break trip in Hilton Head, S.C.
