Springfield, Mass. (April 11) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team claimed its third Northeast-10 Conference victory on Saturday with a 9-0 sweep of American International College. Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) extended his NE-10 win streak to 5-0 at No. 1 singles.
With the win, Assumption improves to 6-7 overall, 3-2 in the NE-10, while AIC falls to 0-7, 0-5 NE-10.
The Hounds kicked off the match with a 3-0 lead after doubles competition. Waung and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) improved to 4-1 in the NE-10 with an 8-1 win over James Worrall and Alfie Cleave at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) paired up for and 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles while the Yellow Jackets forfeited the No. 3 match.
All five Hounds to play in singles competition won in two sets, beginning with Waung who claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for Assumption. In the No. 2 match-up, sophomore Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) topped Cleave 6-1, 6-2 to improve to 7-5 on the season at No. 2.
Rahnasto and sophomore Zack Slepchuk (Holyoke, Mass. / Saint Mary's) both gave up just one game in two sets. Rahnasto took the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-0 over Timothy Zoma while Slepchuk earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Johno May.
The only Hound to shut out his opponent on the day was sophomore Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional), who finished off Jason Popek at No. 4 6-0, 6-0.
The Yellow Jackets forfeited the No. 6 singles match for the final score of 9-0.
Assumption returns home tomorrow, April 12, for part two of this weekend's home stand. The Hounds are scheduled to face Merrimack at Wachusett Regional High School starting at 12 p.m.
