Colchester, Vt. (April 15) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team tallied eight points over the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights on Wednesday on the road. The squad won all but one match, including NE-10 Player of the Week Chris Waung's (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) near shutout at No. 1 singles.
With the win, the Hounds improve to 7-8, 4-3 in the NE-10, while Saint Michael's falls to 1-9, 1-8 in the league.
The Hounds took two in doubles competition. Waung and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) earned an 8-2 victory at No. 1 while sophomores Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) took the No. 3 match, also by a score of 8-2.
In the No. 2 match, the sophomore pairing of Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) and Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) battled it out, but ultimately fell by an extremely close score of 9-7.
All six Greyhounds notched singles victories on the day. Waung claimed his seventh NE-10 victory with his 6-0, 6-2 win over Bill Wood while Leung earned his fifth-straight NE-10 win at No. 2. Leung claimed the match, 6-1, 6-2.
Rahnasto finished the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-3 while Zylak took the No. 4, 6-2, 6-0.
The final two matches were played to eight points. Hodor and Knight both earned 8-2 victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, to wrap up the match.
The Hounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, April 16, for a road contest at Franklin Pierce. Competition is set to begin at 2 p.m.
