Manchester, N.H. (April 17) -- The Assumption College men's tennis team claimed its third-straight victory on Friday evening at Southern New Hampshire University. The Greyhounds topped the Penmen by a score of 6-3, taking just one doubles match before claiming five-of-six singles matches for the win.
Win the win, Assumption improves to 9-8 on the season, 6-3 in the NE-10 and remains in playoff contention, sitting in fifth-place overall in the NE-10. The defending NE-10 Champion Penmen drop to 4-12 overall, 4-6 in the conference, to slip to seventh in the conference standings.
The Hounds earned just one doubles victory when sophomores Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) topped SNHU's Brad Malenich and Emerson Kelby by a score of 8-4 in the No. 3 match.
Four-time NE-10 Player of the Week Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) suffered just their second NE-10 loss of the season at No. 1 doubles, dropping the match 8-4 while sophomores Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) and Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) fell 8-1 at No. 2.
In singles competition, Waung continued his impressive streak, tallying his ninth NE-10 victory at No. 1 singles to remain undefeated in the league, 9-0. He topped SNHU's Xavier Aubron 6-3, 6-3 for the win.
Leung, who was named to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll for his own NE-10 streak last week, claimed a three-set victory at No. 2 for his eighth NE-10 win. Leung won the first set 6-4 before dropping set two 6-3. The sophomore battled back in the third, however, with a 6-4 win to clinch the match.
Rahnasto earned his own victory at No. 3 to improve to 5-4 in the NE-10 on the season, claiming a two-set win over Emerson Kelby, 6-2, 6-2.
Zylak also claimed a two-set win at No. 5, earning a 6-4 victory in set one before escaping with a narrow 7-6 win in set two.
In the No. 6 match, Knight pushed the match to three sets, taking the first 7-6 before dropping the second 6-3. He came back in the third for a 10-4 win to finish off Mark Dobek.
The Hounds are poised for NE-10 playoffs and have just one more regular season contest before the six-team playoff field is announced. Assumption is scheduled to host Adelphi on Saturday to wrap up the regular season. The location for the contest is to be determined.
