Holden, Mass. (April 18) -- After taking three-straight matches to go on a win streak near the end of the season, the Assumption College men's tennis team dropped its regular-season finale on Saturday in an 8-1 final against Adelphi. The Hounds finish the regular-season fifth in the NE-10 for a conference tournament berth with a 9-9 overall record, 6-4 in the league.
The Greyhounds went into singles competition down 3-0 after falling to Adelphi (8-4, 8-1 NE-10) in all three doubles matches. Sophomores Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) battled at No. 3, falling by a narrow score of 9-8.
Sophomore Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and junior Viljami Rahnasto (Vantaa, Finland / Eiran lukio) fell 8-5 at No. 1 doubles for just their third NE-10 loss of the season, while the sophomore pairing of Jakob Zylak (Dunbarton, N.H. / Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) and Casey Hodor (Wickford, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) also lost, 8-5 at No. 2.
In singles competition, Waung dropped his first NE-10 match of the season, falling 6-1, 6-1 to snap his nine-win streak while Leung extended his own streak to eight with a three-set win over Adelphi's Uladzislau Litvinchuk. Leung fell in the first set 5-7 before coming back with a 6-2 victory in set two and a 10-6 win in set three for Assumption's lone point.
The Hounds fell in the final four singles matches, each in two sets. Rahnasto fell 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3, Zylak dropped the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-3 and Knight fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Hodor was shut out 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Assumption has clinched the fifth seed in the 2014-15 NE-10 Tournament with its 6-4 conference record. The Hounds will begin tournament play in the NE-10 Quarterfinals on April 21 as they travel to the #4 seed, Bentley, for a 2 p.m. contest.
