-The Lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated Division I Holy Cross, 6-3, in Tuesday's home opener for the first time in over 14 years. The Hounds picked up their first win of the season on the brand new Assumption College Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Junior Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and sophomore Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) executed an outstanding comeback at No. 1 doubles against the Crusaders' Jaclyn Carroll and Allison Reiling. The duo went down early by a score of 5-1 before rallying for a nail-biting 8-6 victory.
-Senior Marie Black (Palmyra, N.Y. / Palmyra-Macedon) and freshman Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) paired up for No.2 doubles play. The match was tight, but the Hounds ultimately fell to Holy Cross, 8-6.
-In the No. 3 doubles match, senior Aubrey Lovejoy (Holden, Mass. / Wachusett Regional) and sophomore Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up another point for the Hounds (8-6) to close doubles competition 2-1.
-Assumption claimed four of the six singles matches including a 6-4, 6-4 victory from Benoit at No. 3; a 6-1, 2-6, 10-7 No. 4 from Lovejoy; a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win for Black at No. 5, and a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win at No. 6 from senior Cassy Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic).
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
-The Hounds defeated Division I Holy Cross for the first time in over 14 years.
-Benoit's win marks her first ever college victory, taking No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-4.
