- The Lead: Despite five players finishing in double figures, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 75-71 overtime home final to the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon at Laska Gym. The teams traded the lead six times in the contest before the Chargers pulled out the four-point win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first half, the Chargers opened up a nine-point lead at 27-18 with 7:25 left after a three from Tommy Hunt. Assumption's Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia/Hallam Senior College) answered with a three just 23 seconds later and late in the period, the Hounds made it a four-point game on a Soukup three-point play. Joshua Guddemi dropped in a three with 29 seconds left in the half though as the visitors led 42-35 at the break behind nine first-half three-pointers.
- New Haven led by as many as 11 points twice in the second, including at 55-44 with 10:38 on the clock after a Hunt layup. Assumption answered with a 15-2 run though, capped by six straight points from sophomore Mat Sulda (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy), as the Hounds took a 59-57 lead with 4:14 remaining. Sulda knocked a three from the corner to get the Hounds within one and gave the hosts the lead on a three-point play as he knocked in a runner off the glass and was fouled.
- The lead changed hands five times over the last 3:54, including on a pair of free throws by Guddemi with 36.8 on the clock as he knocked down 2-of-3 attempts after being fouled on a three-point try. Coming out of a timeout in the final seconds of regulation, sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) scored off the glass with 9.9 left to send the game into overtime tied at 67-67.
- Assumption never led in the overtime period, but tied the game at 71-71 with just 1:04 remaining on a Bey move off the glass. New Haven notched the eventual game-winning basket with 36.7 left as Levy Gillespie dropped in a three from the right wing for the 74-71 lead. Jemal Mosley hit a free throw late for the four-point lead as the Hounds dropped the four-point final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
-  Soukup led the Hounds in scoring with 19 points, along with 16 from Bey, 11 from Sulda and 10 from junior Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park). Senior Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) also added 11 points off the bench as he was 5-for-9 shooting from the field.
- New Haven had four players in double figures as the Chargers were led by 19 points from Michael Bourke. Hunt finished with 13 for New Haven, along with 10 from both Guddemi and Gillespie.
- New Haven outscored the Hounds 42-15 from three-point land, but it was Assumption that held a 40-24 scoring advantage in the paint.
