- The Lead: Led by a game-high 21 points from senior Tre Owens (Rota, Spain/Rota), the Assumption College men's basketball team rallied from an eight-point, second-half deficit for an 83-78 home win over visiting Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The teams were even at 16-16 with 11:31 left in the first before the Hounds took their first lead on a three from freshman Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va./Christ Chapel Academy) at the 10:51 mark. Assumption led by as many as four at 28-24 before a 7-0 Le Moyne run put the visitors back in front by one. The Dolphins took a 39-33 lead into the halftime break after a three at the buzzer from Qwadere Lovell out of a timeout with 3.2 seconds remaining.
- Le Moyne shot 56 percent from the field and 60 percent from three in the period, while the Hounds connected at a 50 percent clip and hit six three-pointers in the half.
- Sophomore Mat Sulda (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) knocked down a three to make 43-38 early in the second and the Hounds eventually took the lead on back-to-back threes from junior Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park) and Tuckson.
- The game was tied at 60-60 after a layup from Le Moyne's Daniel Kaigler, but the Hounds countered with an 8-0 run that was capped by a corner three from Sulda with 6:58 left. The back-and-forth play continued as the Dolphins pulled to within three at 78-75 after a three from the corner by Eriq Jenkins.
- Le Moyne cut the lead down to two on another Jenkins three from the corner with 38.2 left before the Hounds sealed the game at the free throw line.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Owens led four Hounds in double figures with 21 points off the bench, while junior Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia/Haddam Senior College) posted 17. Sulda picked up the start and finished with 14 points, while Tuckson added 13 points in 26 minutes off the bench.
- As a team, the Hounds were a remarkable 17-of-28 from three-point land and overall shot 57.7 percent from the field.
- Lovell was the leading scorer for Le Moyne with 16 points, while Tanner Hyland added 14 and Russell Sangster notched 14 points and six boards. Kaigler also finished in double figures with 10 points off the bench as the Dolphins shot 55.6 percent from the field.
