- The Lead: In a back-and-forth Senior Day contest on Saturday afternoon, the Assumption College men's basketball team dropped a 96-93 overtime final to visiting Saint Michael's College at Laska Gym. Prior to the start of the game, the Hounds honored seniors Julian Aiken (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), Darren Chew (Uniondale, N.Y./Saint Dominic), Tim Kasper (Cologne, Germany/Gymnasium Schloss Hagerhof) and Tre Owens (Rota, Spain/Rota) for their contributions to the program during their careers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the overtime period, Greg Grippo's jumper just 27 seconds in put Saint Michael's up 85-83. Assumption sophomore Kamali Bey (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson Academy) tied the game on a layup moments later. The Purple Knights pulled out to an 89-86 lead with 2:37 left before Owens drilled a three to tie the game for the seventh time as the game remained a one-possession for the rest of the way. The Hounds had the ball with 13.7 seconds left trailing by three and found Bey underneath for a layup with under four seconds remaining. After Zaire Williams hit two free throws to stretch the lead back to three, Aiken's three-point attempt at the buzzer was off as the Purple Knights took the victory.
- In the opening half, the Purple Knights ran out to a 22-15 lead with 10:33 left after a pair of free throws from senior Matt Bonds. Assumption roared back though with a 14-0 run over just 2:38 and took the 29-22 lead after a three from sophomore Mat Sulda (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy). The Hounds still led by seven with 4:08 on the clock before a 7-0 run pulled Saint Michael's even as Assumption eventually held the narrow 40-39 lead at the half.
- Saint Michael's led by as many as 11 points in the second half and continued to hold a 72-67 advantage after a pair of free throws from Morrell Gaskins with 4:37 left. Three-pointers from Sulda and Aiken staked the Hounds to an 81-77 lead before SMC's Grippo nailed a three to make it a one-point game. Two Aiken free throws made it a three-point margin yet again, but it was Levi Holmes III that nailed a three with seven seconds left in regulation to force the extra period.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Owens led the Hounds with 21 points, along with a career-high 20 points from Sulda. In addition, Aiken added 17 for his second straight double-digit game, along with 15 points and a team-high six assists from junior Reilly Reid (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park).
- All five Saint Michael's starters finished the game in double figures, including an incredible 19-point, 17-rebound double-double from Bonds.
