THE BASICS:
-Score: Assumption 4, Stonehill 5
-Records: Assumption (1-3, 0-1 NE-10); Stonehill (5-4, 2-0 NE-10)
-Location: The Assumption College men's tennis team dropped a close contest to Stonehill College in its spring opener at the Assumption College Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass on Wednesday evening. The Hounds fell to the Skyhawks by a narrow score of 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Assumption came out of doubles play down 2-1. Junior Casey Hodor (North Kingstown, R.I. / Bishop Hendricken) and junior Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug Regional) fell first by a score of 8-2 to Jeffrey Gagnon and Michael Doody at No. 3 doubles.
-At No. 1 doubles, junior Chris Waung (Bolton, Conn. / East Catholic) and sophomore Ryan Foster (Bloomfield, Conn. / Classical Magnet) were defeated by Thomas Bellio and Nikolay Lisichenok by a score of 8-4.
-With Assumption down 2-0, junior Marco Leung (Macao / The International School of Macao) and freshman Reb Mariano (New London, Conn. / Saint Andrew's School) battled for a close 9-7 tiebreaker victory.
-In singles competition, Waung claimed a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over reigning NE-10 Player of the Week, Bellio, while Foster took the No. 2 singles match, 6-4, 6-2.
-Leung earned a 6-3, 7-6 win over Castillo on a 2-0 tiebreaker at No. 3 singles.
-Hodor fell at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 and Knight dropped the No. 6 match 6-4, 6-0.
-With the score tied at 4-4, it all came down to the No. 4 singles match. Mariano battled in the first set, winning 7-6 on a 3-0 tiebreaker before falling in the next two 6-1, 6-4 for the ultimate 5-4 final score.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
-Foster is currently 3-0 in dual-match play.
-Foster and Waung are currently 2-1 in dual-match play at No. 1 doubles on the season while Waung is 2-1 in dual-match singles play.
-Wednesday's match not only marked the Hounds' spring opener, but also Assumption's first NE-10 match of the season.
