- The Lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated Division I Holy Cross, 4-3, in Thursday's home opener for the Crusaders. The victory marks the second consecutive win for the Hounds over Holy Cross, after not having beaten the Division I school in over 14 years.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) and junior Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) won at No.1 doubles, taking down their counterparts 8-2. The Crusaders earned a point at No. 2 doubles, before freshmen Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) and Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) won at third doubles, 8-2.
- Holy Cross's sophomore Allison Reiling won at No.1 singles, before Assumption rattled off three consecutive victories. Riley defeated the Crusaders No.2 Katie Elia in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, while Sophomore Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Latoni was the final victor for the Hounds, winning in two sets at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
