- The lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated Saint Anselm by a score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 match up in Manchester, N.H. This is the Hounds' second win in as many days, as Assumption defeated American International College yesterday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) and senior Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Meghan Golden and Tess Malerbi.
- Freshman Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Family) and classmate Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) teamed up at No. 3 doubles to claim an 8-1 win over Saint Anselm's Caroline Templer and Bridget Keefe, helping to lead the Hounds into singles play with a 2-1 advantage.
- Saint Anselm kicked off singles play with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, before sophomore Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) came away victorious out of the third fight, winning her match 6-0, 6-2.
- Monje faced Kaitlin Hughes at No. 4 singles where she picked up a point for the Hounds, winning the match by a score of 6-4, 6-0.
- Latoni and junior Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up the last two matches for the Hounds with a pair of two-set victories. Latoni defeated Templer by a score of 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Holland claimed a win over Keefe at No. 6 by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Benoit, Monje and Latoni went unbeaten in singles play over the weekend.
- The Hounds picked up three wins in the span of four days, defeating Holy Cross, AIC and Saint Anselm.
- Assumption is currently fifth in the NE-10 with a 3-1 conference record. Only Stonehill College remains unbeaten in conference play.
