- The lead: The Assumption College women's tennis team defeated the reigning NE-10 champion Adelphi University 6-3 this afternoon in conference play. The victory is a significant one for the Hounds, as the win pushes the team's streak to six matches, matching last year's program record win streak. This is also the first time in program history that Assumption has defeated Adelphi in women's tennis.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Sophomore Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) teamed up with senior Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) to take the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-4 over Adelphi's Karen Serina and Vanja Savic.
- Freshman Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) paired up with classmate Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) for No. 3 doubles and won by default, as Adelphi did not enter any players into the match. It proved to be a big point as the Hounds led going into singles play with a 2-1 lead.
- Senior Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) swept the No. 2 singles match by scores of 6-1, 6-4 over Adelphi's Savic.
- At No. 3 singles, Benoit kept the momentum going, claiming a close 6-0, 3-6, 10-2 win against Sarina.
- Latoni received another point for the Hounds by taking a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Maria Bruzon Gutierrez at No. 5 singles.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption remains undefeated since its opening day loss to Southern New Hampshire.
- Benoit, Latoni and Carbone were the only Hounds to post two victories on the day, as the wins came in both doubles and singles play.
- Saturday's win extends the Greyhounds' streak to six, marking the longest winning streak in recent history.
- Today's victory marks the first time Assumption has defeated Adelphi in women's tennis in program history.
