The Lead: Assumption women's tennis left no doubt about extending their win streak to a program-record nine, as they efficiently took care of visiting Franklin Pierce and gave up just nine total points in singles play in capturing a 9-0 victory on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Hounds were solid once again in doubles play to open the match, as the No. 1 duo of Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) and Hannah Riley (Ellington, Conn. / Ellington) won 8-4, while the second pairing of Kristen Carbone (Taunton, Mass. / Coyle-Cassidy) and Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) took they match 8-3.
- Santina Marinelli (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) and Maggie Holland (Newburyport, Mass. / St. Thomas Aquinas) made it a sweep with an 8-2 victory at the third flight.
- In singles, Burbine won the first set 6-0 before her opponent had to retire and Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) won by matching 6-2 sets in second flight singles.
- Freshman Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name), and Latoni each gave up a single point in winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0, while Carbone and Holland earned victories at five and sixth singles to complete the shutout.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Hounds ninth straight victory extends their own program record. It also matches their win total from each of the past two seasons. One more would clinch the program's first 10-win season since 1996.
- Eight different player earned victories between singles and doubles, led by 2-0 marks from Burbine, Carbone, Latoni and Holland.
UP NEXT:
- Assumption is on the road at the ITA Championships on Long Island this weekend before returning to conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 5 against Merrimack.
