THE BASICS:

The Lead: Assumption was tied 38-38 at the half and led by two with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, but Adelphi used some strong defense and timely shooting to pull away for an 83-73 victory on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The Hounds and Panthers were tied 8-8 early in the first, before nine straight points gave Adelphi a 17-8 lead at 12:12. The visitors extended their lead to 24-13, but a 15-4 run by Assumption tied up the game with 4:44 left in the half on a layup by Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia / Hallam Senior College).

- Just 30 seconds later Damien Rance (Melbourne, Australia / Pope John XXIII) put the Hounds in front 31-30. The teams then traded baskets over the final three minutes of the period, and a Rance free throw knotted it at 38 apiece going into the break.

- It was back-and-forth over the first five minute of the second half, before a 4-0 spurt by Assumption gave them a 54-51 lead at 13:18 on two Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va. / Annandale) free throws. Adelphi took back the lead and eventually used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 73-60 with 5:46 remaining. The Hounds couldn't get any closer than nine the rest of the way as they fell 83-73.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Assumption shot 46.7 percent from the floor and was 7 of 16 from downtown, but Adelphi connected on 57.7 percent of its shots and was 6 for 18 from beyond the arc. The Panthers also held a 39-18 rebounding edge.

- Rance led the team with 20 points, nine rebounds and one steal, while Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va. / Christ Chapel Academy) came off the bench to provide 17 points and two assists. Patrick Fleming (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Iona Prep) chipped in six steal, five assists, two rebounds and two points.

- Five players scored in double figures for Adelphi, led by Austin Beech with 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Chris Millender added 16 points and ten rebounds.
