- The Lead: Assumption used a 3-0 advantage in doubles to come away with a crucial 5-4 road victory over Bentley on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Assumption opened doubles play with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 from Maria Monje (Worcester, Mass. / Holy Name) and Valeria Sanchez (Carolina, P.R. / Colegio La Piedad), followed by an 8-4 win at first flight doubles from Cassie Burbine (Londonderry, N.H. / Londonderry) and Julia Chappell (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central).
- At No. 3 doubles, the duo of junior Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass. / St. Peter Marian Central Catholic) and Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R. / Academia Maria Reina) came through with a hard-fought 9-7 victory to secure the doubles sweep.
- In singles action, Burbine fell in straight sets at No. 1, while Benoit did the same at No. 3 singles. Sanchez also fell in straight sets at fifth flight singles, while Latoni won her match 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
- Chappell provided the game-winning point with her straight set victory by a 7-5, 6-4 score. Monje dropped her first set 6-2 but claimed the second set 6-1 to force a 10-point tie breaker. She fell 10-5 for the 5-4 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Assumption's 8-1 start to the season is the second-best in program history, trailing last year's 10-1 mark to open the season.
