The Lead: Assumption jumped out to an early lead, but Southern New Hampshire came storming back and managed to hold off a late Hound run in the final five minutes to earn a 67-58 victory at home on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Back-to-back layups by Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va. / Christ Chapel Academy) and Damien Rance (Melbourne, Australia / Pope John XXIII) gave Assumption an 11-7 advantage at 14:56. SNHU tied it up three minutes later and extended its lead to 18-13 with 10:21 left in the half.
- Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) countered with a triple to close within three, but a 10-6 run stretched the Penmen advantage to 28-19 with 3:35 left in the period. Austin Kearney (Monroeville, N.J. / Gloucester County Christian) made it just a six-point game at 2:07 and Assumption eventually went into the half down 32-24.
- SNHU extended its lead to 15 points five minutes into the second, before five straight once again made it a 10-point game. Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia / Hallam Senior College) then cut it to 49-41 at 9:46 and Vujadinovic trimmed it to six, before Rance connected on a triple from the wing to trail 49-46 at 8:35.
- Assumption nearly pulled within one, but the Penmen got a stop and eventually pushed their lead to 59-46 with 3:36 left. Vujadinovic ended the run and Rance followed with a three but the Hounds couldn't get any closer than seven points over the last two minutes as they fell by nine.
