The Lead: Assumption and Bentley traded baskets over the final ten minutes and the Hounds led by one with three minutes remaining, however, the Falcons finished the contest on a 10-2 run to earn a 70-63 victory on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Bentley jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the opening three minutes, before a Declan Soukup (Melbourne, Australia / Hallam Senior College) triple ended the run. The Hounds closed within two at 14:08 on a layup by Soukup, though ten straight points by the Falcons extended their lead to 22-10 with 9:01 left.
- Damien Rance (Melbourne, Australia / Pope John XXIII) cut it to 22-12 with a pair of free throws, but Bentley still led by 11 with 6:58 remaining. A Nick Pasquale (Shrewsbury, Mass. / Worcester Academy) dunk started a run and two free throws from Soukup trimmed it to just 28-24 at 4:07. Assumption cut it to two with 42 seconds left and Pasquale tied it on a layup with time winding down for a 30-30 draw after 20 minutes.
- Patrick Fleming (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Iona Prep) gave the Hounds a 34-32 advantage one minute into the period, however Bentley responded with six straight points for a 38-34 lead at 15:45. Assumption countered with a 12-6 run, capped off by a Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) layup for a 46-44 advantage at 10:32.
- Justin Tuckson (Stafford, Va. / Christ Chapel Academy) gave the Hounds a 51-48 lead at 7:54, but the Falcons went on a 6-1 run to pull in front 54-52 with six minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes, with a Bentley jumper providing a 64-61 cushion with 1:44 remaining. Karl Ziegler (Annandale, Va. / Annandale) swished a baseline jumper for a one-point game at 1:09, but Assumption failed to score again as the Falcons held on for the 70-63 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bentley shot 49.1 percent in the contest as was 6-for-15 from beyond the arc, while the Assumption shot 42.6 percent and connected on 7 of 18 three-point attempts.
- The Falcons held a slight 35-30 rebounding edge, but the Hounds dished off more assists (17-11) and received more points from its bench (15-4).
- Vujadinovic led three players in double figures with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Tuckson contributed 13 points and two rebounds.
- Soukup added 13 points and four rebounds while Fleming provided a bit of everything with two points, four rebounds and six assists.
- Ryan Richmond paced the Bentley offense with 27 points, 19 of which came in the second half, ten rebounds, three assists and two steals.
