-The Lead: The Assumption College men's basketball team defeated the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. The Assumption defense held AIC to just 26 points in the first half and 28 points in the second half and hit all 20 of their free-throws to capture the final 75-54 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead by five at the 17:18 mark, Assumption responded with four made free-throws by red-shirt junior Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md. / Clinton Christian School) and a three-pointer by junior Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) to take a 9-7 advantage.
-AIC pulled ahead by six with 6:56 on the clock as senior Logan Santiago picked them up with a three-pointer and two made layups, 22-16.
-First year Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass. / Catholic Memorial / Bridgton Academy) knocked down a three-pointer for the Hounds to tie the game at 24-24 with under five to go in the first. He pushed Assumption's lead to seven with another three at the 1:50 mark. Red-shirt junior Malik Brown (Waldorf, Md. / Northpoint) and White added layups before the buzzer to give the Hounds the 35-26 lead heading into the halftime break.
-White and Kelly led the Hounds in scoring the first half with 12 and 11 points respectively.
-The Yellow Jackets pulled within three when junior Xion Golding made a dunk with 15:28 on the clock, 39-36. That is as close as the visitors would come as Assumption went on to outscore them 40-28 in the second half.
-Senior Branislav Vujadinovic (Belgrade, Serbia / St. Joseph) and Brown each put up 11 points in the second half as the Hounds took home the 75-54 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Brown put up a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds on the day to go along with four assists and three steals. Kelly led all scorers with 20 points. Glover came off the bench with 13 points for the Hounds, White finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Vujadinovic rounded out double-digit scoring with 11 points.
-Santiago led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points. Senior Zekiah Owens and red-shirt sophomore Branislav Terzic both scored 11 points in the setback.
-Assumption shot 43.4% (25-for-53) from the field and went 9-for-24 from three-point range. AIC shot 32.1% (18-for-56) from field goal range and finished 6-for-25 from behind the arc.
-The Hounds were 100% from the free-throw line, going 20-for-20.
-Assumption outrebounded AIC 37-30.
-Both teams turned the ball over 16 times.
