-The Lead: Making their 2021-22 debut with an appearance in the two-day Delta Hotel Doc Jacobs Tipoff Classic (hosted by Saint Michael's College), Assumption men's basketball defeated Georgian Court, 84-59 in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Lions jumped out to a quick start, building an early 7-2 cushion just 1:30 after the opening tip. The Greyhounds took over from there, outscoring GCU by a 50-22 margin and taking a 23-point surplus (52-29) heading into the halftime break.
-Senior Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) made the first three-pointer of the game for the Greyhounds to bring them within two, 7-5. Graduate student Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) put up 20 points and dished out five assists in the first half. He went 4-for-6 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. His classmate, Omar El Sheikh (Giza, EG / The Fairfield/The Knox School) grabbed eight rebounds, seven defensive, to lead the Greyhounds at the boards in the first half.
-Georgian Court would be unable to slice its deficit to less than 22 points in the second frame (2:57 left) as Assumption secured a win in the program's first competition since the 2019-20 campaign.
-Redshirt junior Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md. / Clinton Christian School) led Assumption in the second half with 10 points while El Sheikh grabbed six more rebounds. The Greyhounds edged Georgian Court, 32-30 in the second half to claim the 84-59 final victory.
INSIDE THE NUMEBRS
-Kelly led the Greyhounds offensively with 20 points on the day. El Sheikh posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and White finished the day with 15 points of his own to go along with eight rebounds.
-DJ Alicea led the Lions with 13 points. Jelani Jackson came off the bench with 13 points for Georgian Court and Clint Wright Jr also had a big night off the bench, putting up 10 points of his own.
-Assumption outrebounded the Lions 49-36.
-The Greyhounds were 33-for-68 from the field, posting a 48.5 field goal percentage. They went 7-for-27 from three-point range.
-The Lions were 22-for-66 from field goal range (33.3%) and went 7-for-24 from beyond the arc.
-Assumption went 11-for-21 from the free throw line (53.4%) while Georgian Court was 8-for-9 (88.9%).
-The Greyhounds forced 14 turnovers by their opponents.
