-The Lead: The Assumption University men's basketball team was edged by the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on the road on Wednesday evening. SNHU led by two at halftime and took the final four-point victory in the final seconds of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-In a game that featured 19 lead changes and eight ties, neither team led by more than six in the opening half. Assumption held a 33-28 lead with just over three minutes to go in the first half when Southern New Hampshire closed the period on a 9-2 run that saw four different scorers. The final four points came from Aaron Gray, as the Penmen took a 37-35 lead into the break.
-SNHU held on to a one-point lead with under five minutes on the clock when a 12-5 stretch – with four points from Corry Long and three each from Matt Becht and Ryan Layman – gave the Penmen their largest lead of the night at 81-73 with 1:55 to go. Assumption countered by scoring 12 of the next 18 to slash its deficit to 87-85. Senior Cal Connelly (Rochester, N.H. / Spaulding / Tilton) and sophomore Nijavan Stweart (Newton Upper Falls, Mass. / Newton South) knocked down three-pointers in the run and graduate student, Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) added four point from two free throws and a made layup. Jacaru Sanders drilled a pair of free throws with less than three seconds remaining to snag the four-point victory for the Penmen, 89-85.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Graduate student, Omar El Sheikh (Giza, EG / The Fairfield/The Knox School) led the Greyhounds, putting up a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
-Red-shirt junior, Jordan White (Prince Frederick, Md. / Clinton Christian School) and Kelly tallied 15 points each while Stewart came off the bench with 13 points for Assumption.
-Becht led SNHU with 25 points in the victory.
-Assumption outrebounded the Penmen, 42-34.
-The Greyhounds shot 44.4% from the field (32-for-72) and went 9-for-29 from beyond the arc. SNHU shot 47.7% from the field (31-for-65) and went 10-for-24 from three-point range.
