-The Lead: The No. 2 seed Adelphi University women's tennis team took its first step towards a potential NE10 title Wednesday afternoon, with a 4-1 win over No. 7 seed Assumption University in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NE10 Championship at the USTA Women's Tennis Center in Flushing.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Panthers' undefeated run in doubles carried into the postseason. Barbie Quagliardi and Nicole Kielan prevailed 6-3 at top doubles over Assumption seniors Julia Chappell (Manchester, N.H. / Manchester Central) and Valeria Sanchez (Carolina, P.R. / Colegio La Piedad). Adelphi sophomore Amanda Franstedt and graduate student Nicole Stay continued their unbeaten play together with a 6-2 victory at the second flight over first year Caitlin Sze (South Windsor, Conn. / South Windsor) and sophomore Cara McCormack (Worcester, Mass. / Doherty Memorial).
-Julia Kielan got Adelphi out to a strong start in singles with a 6-0, 6-4 decision at the No. 5 flight over sophomore Aimee Figgins (Milford, Mass. / Hopedale Jr./Sr. High School). Stay followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sanchez at No. 3. Quagliardi shut the door in straight sets (6-1, 6-3), as well, at No. 2 singles with Sze.
-In the unfinished matches, Nicole Kielan won a 9-7 tiebreaker in her first set at top singles with Chappell. Franstedt was even at 3-3 in her first set at No. 3 singles against McCormack at the time the match had been declared over.
