THE BASICS

-Location: New Haven, CT (Charger Gymnasium)

-The Lead:  The Assumption University men's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon with a conference matchup versus the Chargers of the University of New Haven. Assumption had a six point lead heading into halftime and held the lead until six minutes left in the game where the Chargers stormed back and won the game on a final second free throw. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Chargers jumped out to an early 12-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game but Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) scored 13 points for the Hounds and gave them their first lead with a little over eight minutes to go in the half. Kelly would put up 18 points in the first half. 

-Omar El Sheikh (Giza, Eg. / The Knox School) would score six of the Hounds first ten points to open the second half and would go on to finish the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds, registering another double double on the year.

-Kelly would add another 13 points in the second half and lead the Hounds with 31 on the night.

-The Chargers used an 8-0 run with to take the lead with four minutes left and the final two minutes would see the two teams traded baskets with the final minute causing a close finish. 

-Kelly would tie the game for the Hounds with a minute left but the Chargers would answer and retake the lead with 30 seconds left. After a timeout by Assumption, Isiah Gaiter (Meriden, Conn. / Huntington Prep) would tie the game again for the Hounds with a layup and the Chargers pushed down the court looking for the win and Quashawn Lane would draw a foul with under a second left and sink a free throw to give the Chargers the slight lead and the win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-The Chargers outshot the Hounds on the day going 26-54 (48.1%) while Assumption went 23-53 (43.4%)

-The Hounds won the rebound battle 32-31. 

UP NEXT

-The Hounds are back in action Tuesday, January 25 with a Northeast 10 conference matchup vs Southern Connecticut State. Tip off is set for 7:30pm.
