-The Lead: The Assumption University men's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Tuesday evening with a conference matchup versus the Owls of Southern Connecticut State. The Hounds jumped out to an early lead and led by 13 at the half with a score of 50-37. They continued to play aggressive and never looked back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hounds used a steady attack in the first five minutes with four different starters getting on the scoreboard. Cooper Creek (Merriden, AU. / Williston Northampton Prep) came off the bench and nailed two three pointers and added a layup to push the Hounds lead to 13 with around 11 minutes to go in the first half. David Tiedemann (Westerly, R.I. / Westerly) also chipped in eight points off the bench in the first.
-Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) scored 11 points over the final five minutes of the first to send Assumption into the locker room up 50-37.
-Njavan Stewart (Newton Upper Falls, Mass. / Newton South) would score seven of the Hounds first 13 points of the second half, hitting two three pointers and converting a free throw.
-Omar El Sheikh (Giza, EG. / The Knox School) would register another double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
-Kelly would lead Assumption with 21 points while the Owls Logan Bagshaw would lead all scorers on the evening with 23 points.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-The Hounds went 32-58 (55.2%) shooting on the night while the Owls were 26-65(40%)
-The Hounds won the rebound battle 45-27.
-Assumption shot 10-20 (50%) from beyond the arc.
