Box Score THE BASICS

-The Lead: The Assumption University men's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Thursday evening with a conference matchup versus the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose. The Golden Knights had the hot hand from beyond the arc all night, taking a 14 point lead into halftime. The Hounds fought back all second half outscoring the Knights by 12 but the visitors were able to hold onto their lead and escape with the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Golden Knights guard duo of Tray Alexander and Adam Anderson caused trouble for the Hounds all night and in the first half they hit eight shots from beyond the arc and combined for 26 points in the half.
-All five Hounds starters contributed to the score sheet in the first, led by sophomore guard Njavan Stewart (Newton Upper Falls, Mass. / Newton South) who had eight points.
- Saint Rose forward Shane O'Dell went 3-3 from three in the first and added 11 points to help give the visitors a 14 point lead headed into the half.
-The Hounds went on a 13-0 run over six minutes in the second half thanks to Dave Tiedemann (Westerly, R.I. / Westerly) and Cooper Creek (Merriden, AU. / Williston Northampton Prep) who came off the bench and combined for 11 points during the run.
-Saint Rose would then use an 11-0 run to retake the lead but Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) and Stewart would hit back to back three pointers to put the Hounds down by three.
-The visitors would go on a 7-2 run to put them up by nine but Kelly would score six points for the Hounds and assist on a Omar El Sheikh (Giza, EG. / The Knox School) to put the Hounds down by three with a little over a minute to play.
-The Golden Knights would kill some time and hit two clutch free throws from Alexander with 12 seconds left to put the visitors up by five but Creek would hit a three pointer with three seconds remaining and were forced to foul on the inbound with one second left and the visitors would escape with the 83-81 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption would go 31-65 (47.7%) shooting on the night while Saint Rose was 31-64 (48.4%)
-The Hounds won the rebound battle 35-32.
-Assumption shot 14-27 (51.9%) from three while Saint Rose went 17-31 (54.8%)
