-The Lead: The Assumption University men's basketball team continued their 2021-22 season on Saturday afternoon with a conference matchup against the Dolphins of Le Moyne College. The Dolphins took a seven point lead into the break and had a 15 point advantage at one point but the Hounds battled back tying the game with five minutes left. The Dolphins were able to close out the game with foul shots and hold onto victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Omar El Sheikh (Giza, Eg. / The Knox School) started the scoring on the day for the Hounds by draining a three pointer.
-After both teams traded baskets over the next few minutes with the Hounds leading 14-9, the Dolphins responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a one point lead.
-Le Moyne would then jump out to a ten point lead with two minutes left in the half but a free throw from El Sheikh and a jumper from Kani Glover (Brockton, Mass. / Bridgton Academy) would cut the deficit to seven.
-The Dolphins would go on a 12-6 run to open the second half, with Njavan Stewart (Newton Upper Falls, Mass. / Newton South) hitting two three pointers for the Hounds.
-The Dolphins would have a 15 point lead with a little over half of the game to play, but the Hounds would use a balanced scoring attack led by Matthew Kelly (North Potomac, Md. / Quince Orchard) who had seven points to help Assumption battle back and tie the game at 54 with five minutes to play.
-The Dolphins would hold a three point lead with under a minute to play, forcing the Hounds to intentionally foul and Xavier Wilson would hit two foul shots to increase the hosts lead to five.
-El Sheikh would hit a layup with 16 seconds left to put the Hounds down by three and again the Hounds were forced to foul and Christian Davis hit two free throws to ice the game and give Le Moyne the 64-59 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Assumption would shoot 19-61 (31.1%) on the day, while Le Moyne went 25-61 (41%)
-The Hounds won the rebound battle 45-39.
-El Sheikh would finish the game with a team high 18 points and 21 rebounds (10 offensive, 11 defensive), tallying his third double double of the week.
