Bentley sours Men's Soccer Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass.– The Assumption men's soccer team had their Senior Day spoiled by Bentley University, as the Falcons scored in the opening minutes and held on to take the 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference decision on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Score: Bentley University 1, Assumption University 0
Records: Greyhounds (4-8-4, 2-6-2 NE10), Falcons (7-5-2, 5-2-2 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons came out with a lot of energy and capitalized first, scoring through Antonio Santos on an initial move started by Evan Levine. Santos put it past Axel Gerremo, who attempted to block the open net and put the visitors up 1-0. For the rest of the half, it was different spells of possession between either side in what was shaping to be a physically controlled contest. Most of the shots that were fired in from the Hounds did not test Joe Griffin in goal. Right at the end of the first half, Johann Fraser had a chance to double the lead, but his effort raised over the bar. At the break, it remained 1-0 Bentley.

The second shot seemed to have just as many fouls as shots, with both teams attempting to show their will physically in the midfield. Sam Winiarski and Fraser saw their shots saved by Iver Sjåvåg at the 74-minute mark. A ball fell to Jorgo Karamelo at the top of the box, but his effort blazed wide right as he tried to volley it home. The Greyhounds could not score in the second half, and the game ended 1-0 in favor of the Falcons.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bentley had 26 shots to Assumption's 14, while eight went on the frame to the two from the home side.
  • Sjåvåg had seven saves in net, while Griffin and Nick Maldarella combined for two
  • Bentley now leads the all-time series 30-18-2.
