Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball outlasted by Saint Anselm, 71-65

MANCHESTER, NH – The Assumption men's basketball team was defeated at Saint Anselm College 71-65 in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

Score: Saint Anselm College 71, Assumption University 65

Records: Greyhounds (4-3, 3-2 NE10), Hawks (3-4, 1-3 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks opened on a quick run, leading 9-4 just three minutes in, with Kyle Hicks scoring the first four for the Hounds. Assumption pulled it closed, with Cooper Creek getting his first points on a three to trail 13-12. Alex Carlisle was also putting together a tidy half, with his turnaround jumper at 10:58 giving the Hounds their first lead on the day at 17-15. It would remain a one-possession game for the long haul of the first half, as Carlisle converted again, which was answered by a Jordan Horne layup to bring the home side in front again. Josh Morissette was helping lead a Saint Anselm offense as he gave his team a four-point lead at 34-30 with 2:25 to go in the first. Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton picked off a Hawk for a steal and got to the free throw line with 49.5 seconds left; however, he could not convert on either. Morissette, however, knocked down both of his just a few moments later, furthering the lead to six, and that's what the difference would be at the break, with Saint Anselm up 36-30.

Saint Anselm would work to extend their lead, going up 45-36 three minutes into the second half as Morissette worked his way up to 16 points. The Hounds battled to stay in it as the Hawk's lead staggered at double digits, with Kani Glover's bucket at 11:58 giving him 11 points and dropping the lead to nine. Glover kept it going with another score, upping his total to 16 and forcing a timeout from Saint Anselm as the lead dwindled to six. A short run got the Hawks back by eight with four minutes to go, but Carlisle quickly added another bucket to bring him to 13 on the day. With two minutes to go, the Hawks led by six. The Hawks drew a charge at 1:24 and a turnover from the Hounds, forcing the Hounds into a timeout. Saint Anselm converted on two free throws, and Kasey Draper hit a falling away three to knock the lead back down to five and keep Assumption in it. Two huge fouls from Saint Anselm kept the drama coming, with an offensive foul giving Assumption the ball and another sending Creek to the line with one and one-coming up. Creek knocked down both, and Saint Anselm was sent to the line as they missed the first and made the second. Glover drove to the basket but could not convert, putting the home side back at the line. After making more free throws, the Hawks held on for a 71-65 win against Assumption.
