Men's Basketball Makes It Five-Straight, with 73-71 Upset Win Over Saint Anselm

WORCESTER, Mass. – A Kani Glover driving layup with eight seconds on the clock is the difference, as the Assumption University men's basketball team extends their winning streak to five games following a 73-71 Northeast-10 Conference win over Saint Anselm College, Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 73, Saint Anselm College 71
Records: Greyhounds (13-12, 9-9 NE10), Hawks (17-7, 13-5 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Anselm came out very slow offensively, and the Greyhounds took advantage of that, as the Hawks started 0-for-6 from the field and were down 5-1 early. However, the Greyhounds also cooled off after making their first two field goals, as it was a 6-5 lead for Saint Anselm at the 14:17 mark. Slowly the offense started to come back, as Njavan Stewart made a layup through contact at 12:11. Both teams were struggling from the field, shooting below 30 percent at the 9:29 mark. Cooper Creek tried to turn the tide, as he buried back-to-back three's to give Assumption a six-point advantage with six remaining in the first half. Stewart began to wake up, too, as he made three consecutive baskets to maintain the six-point advantage with less than two minutes remaining. The Greyhounds ended the half on an 8-0 run and leading 35-25, with Stewart going coast-to-coast to beat the buzzer.

Both sides exchanged baskets in the early going of the second half, including another deep three from Cal Connelly at 16:08 to keep the lead at eight. Connelly answered again with a deep three-ball, and Head Coach Scott Faucher took a timeout to regroup at 14:20 with the Hounds up six. The Hawks continued to push despite the game slowing down as a transition layup by Miles Tention at 9:54 cut the deficit to one. Assumption started to heat up down the stretch, but so did Tyler Arbuckle, who was 3-of-4 in his last field goals, to continue to chip away at the slight Greyhound lead. The flow was back and forth the whole second half, with Saint Anselm continuing to get close but unable to turn the corner on the lead. Finally, the Hawks were able to tie the game, with Zac Taylor knocking down his second three to tie it up at 71-71 with 1:58 remaining. With the ball, Saint Anselm attacked the paint, but Kani Glover forced a huge offensive foul and put the ball back in the hands of the Greyhounds with 38.2 seconds remaining. With the game on the line, Glover drove and finished with eight seconds to go to put the Greyhounds up two. In the dying seconds, Isiah Gaiter rejected Arbuckle at the rim, ending the game and improving Assumption's form to eight of their last night.
