HOOKSETT, NH – In an OT thriller in New Hampshire,
Isabelle Edwards scored the game-winning goal for the Assumption University women's lacrosse team. They pulled off the comeback to a 17-16 win at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 17, Southern New Hampshire University 16 - OT
Records: Greyhounds (8-6, 5-5 NE10), Penmen (9-6, 5-6 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The huge conference clash between the No. 21 Greyhounds and the No. 24 Penmen started with the Hounds on the front foot scoring first through
Jenna Joseph. After that, Southern New Hampshire scored five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead, while the Hounds got one back to trail 5-2 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was full of goals, with Assumption scoring four straight to lead 6-5.
Katelynn Johnston went on a tear in the second quarter, scoring four goals to give the Hounds a 10-8 lead on the road into halftime.
The third quarter was a bit slower, but Assumption still managed to hold the lead. Johnston got in on the action again to open the third, followed by
Isabelle Edwards and
Isabella Jackson to close off the quarter.
The home team dominated the fourth quarter for a long stretch, scoring five straight goals to go up by two with 3:19 remaining to play. Assumption relied on one of their premier goal scorers down the stretch, as
Katelynn Johnston scored not one but two goals with less than three minutes remaining to send the game to overtime. Johnston earned a free position shot and scored with less than one second remaining on the clock.
With 52 seconds remaining in the overtime period,
Isabelle Edwards won a free position and fired the shot home, winning the game for Assumption 17-16 in an eventful Northeast-10 conference matchup.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Skylar Troyan earned the win after making six stops for the Greyhounds.
- Katelynn Johnston led all scorers with seven goals on the day.
- The Greyhounds won the ground ball battle 17-14 while the Penmen had four more shots at 32-28
