GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Assumption University softball team's historic run comes to a close, as the No. 6 seed Greyhounds fell to the No. 1 seed Adelphi University 3-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship at Janet L. Ficke Field Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Score: Adelphi University 3, Assumption University 0
Records: Greyhounds (24-17, 13-11 NE10), Falcons (28-14-1 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The top-seeded Panthers started fast, as they plated a pair of runs as they capitalized on some timely hitting and a miscue by the Assumption defense. Following the first inning, both teams settled down, and the pitching and defense took over.
The Greyhounds had their first base runner in the top of the fourth inning, as
Corin Mahan was plunked, and would reach third as
Kaitlyn Cahill reached on an error by the Adelphi first baseman. Unfortunately, Assumption was unable to scratch across a run, and the Panthers maintained a 2-0 advantage. The Hounds threatened again in the fifth, as
Summer Sheerin tripled down the left field line, but she would be stranded there.
Adelphi would eventually add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to go up 3-0. Following the lone hit by the Greyhounds in the top of the fifth, Panther pitcher retired seven straight to clinch the NE10 title for the hosts.
Assumption was the highest seed to reach the championship since No. 6 American International lost in the finals in 2010, while is the first team to defeat both the number two and three seeds since Le Moyne did it in 2009.
