Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Bloomfield in Double OT, 93-92

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University men's basketball team dropped their season opener to Bloomfield College, 93-92 in double overtime, Friday evening inside Andrew Laska Gymnasium. 
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears started strong from the floor, hitting five of their first ten shots, and went up 11-4, but with some timely defense, the Greyhounds would tie the game at 13-13. Noah Payne gave the Hounds a 15-13 lead at the 11:14 mark of the first half, which sparked a 22-11 run by Assumption, pushing the lead to 35-26. The Blue and White would carry their nine-point advantage into the break (39-30). 
 
Bloomfield would slowly chip away at the deficit and tie the game at 51-51 at 10:18. Following the Bears tying the game, the Greyhounds went on a 13-6 run to go up 64-57. The guest would slowly chip away at the deficit and eventually take the lead at 74-73 with 34.5 on the game clock. Luke Michaelski would hit one of two free throws to send the game to overtime. 
 
After Bloomfield held the lead for most of the extra frame, a hook shot by Michalski gave Assumption a late lead with 32.5 on the clock. Izaiah Poole tied the game with 3.5 seconds left in the first overtime and would send it to a second extra frame. After trailing for most of the second overtime, Jamal Barnes put Assumption up 90-89 at the 1:02 mark. The two teams would trade layups in the final minute, where Kareeme Davis converted on a layup with 3.5 seconds left in the second extra period, which proved to be the game-winning because Jamal Barnes missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and Bloomfield pulled out a 93-92 win. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Greyhounds had balanced scoring, with six players in double figures, led by Luke Michalski's 17 points. 
  • Bloomfield outrebounded Assumption 59-49, while the Greyhounds had 17 steals, compared to 11 for the Bears. 
  • Zee McCown and Noah Payne combined for eight steals, seven rebounds, and ten assists in their first collegiate action. 
  • Head Coach Scott Faucher started one freshman and played four over 20 minutes. The four combined to score 38 points and record 18 rebounds, 12 assists, nine steals, and three blocks on the night. 
  • The all-time series is now tied 3-3.
