Balanced Scoring Propels Men’s Basketball to its 11th Consecutive Win, Defeating SCSU 98-89

NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The Assumption University men's basketball team runs their winning streak to 11 games, as the Greyhounds defeated Southern Connecticut State University 98-89 in a road Northeast-10 Conference matchup Sunday afternoon. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 
Southern Connecticut started fast, as they raced out to an early 13-4 advantage and would see their largest lead of the contest at the 15:50 marker of the opening frame following a Makai Coleman three-pointer. Assumption would slowly chip away at the deficit and take their first lead of the contest with 5:07 showing on the first half clock, as Noah Payne hit a jump shot. The two teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the opening frame, but SCSU would have the edge at the break, as Isaac Hester hit a three-pointer at the horn (51-49). 
 
In the second half, Assumption shot the lights out as they saw 58.1 percent (18-of-31) of their shots fall. In the opening nine minutes, the two teams continued to trade hoops as Zee McCown led the charge for the Greyhounds with seven points. In the final 11 minutes, the Blue and White saw 10-of-18 shots fall, and Daouda Dembele led the charge with six points as the Hounds turned a three-point deficit (74-71) into a 98-89 road win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Njavan Stewart led the Greyhounds for the second-straight contest, as the guard shot 7-of-9 for 19 points while adding two boards. Four other Greyhounds surpassed the 10+ point threshold, as Jamal Barnes (17), Zee McCown (16), Kyle Hicks (12), and Dauoda Dembele (10) recorded 10+ points. 
  • Assumption outrebounded Southern 33-24, outscored the hosts 42-36 in the paint, and had a 25-4 advantage on second-chance points. 
  • This is the fifth time the Greyhounds have surpassed 90+ points this season. 
  • Southern Connecticut leads the all-time series 17-16.
