STATEN ISLAND, NY. —The Assumption University men's basketball team opened the year with a decisive win against Chestnut Hill, 87-64, in the first game of the Tournament of Heroes on the campus of the College of Staten Island, Friday afternoon.
THE BASICS:
Scores: Assumption University 87, Chestnut Hill College 64

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption established their style of high-pressure defense and fast-paced offense early, as they ran an 8-6 lead to a 38-14 lead with 6:32 to go in the first half, with
Noah Payne leading the way with 12 points, while
Daouda Dembele added eight. Chestnut Hill tried to get back into the game, as they went on an 8-0 run to draw within 16, but the Greyhounds closed out the first half on a 13-6 stretch to head into the intermission up 51-82.
In the second half, Assumption struggled to find the bottom of the basket as the Griffins got within 16 (59-43). Chestnut Hill had a late run, as they trimmed a 22-point advantage by the Greyhounds down to 16 (76-57) with 5:11 left in regulation, but the Hounds would close the game on a 14-7 run, with
Zee McCown leading the charge with five points.
BY THE NUMBERS:
- Tayeshawn Cunningham-Pemberton had a game-high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting, while adding four rebounds and two steals.
- The backcourt duo of Noah Payne and Zee McCown combined to score 35 points, five rebounds, nine assists, and five steals.
- The Greyhounds had 17 steals in the contest, led by Lenny Tangishaka, who collected four.
- Assumption shot 60.0 percent from the field, while also holding Chestnut Hill to 39.6 percent.
- The Hounds turned 25 Griffins turnovers into 20 fastbreak points and 46 points in the paint.
- Assumption leads the all-time series 4-1.
