WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's basketball team came away with a 55-52 defensive slugfest against Southern Connecticut State University in Northeast-10 Conference action, Saturday afternoon in Andrew Laska Gymnasium.
THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 55, Southern Connecticut State University 52
Records: Greyhounds (16-8, 11-6 NE10) | Owls (13-9, 9-7 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a slow start by both teams, as they combined to shoot 5-of-28 from the field in the first ten minutes, with Southern Connecticut maintaining a slight advantage (8-6). Assumption's offense started to click in the latter part of the first half, as they shot 7-of-12, with
Daouda Dembele recording five of the 19 points. The Greyhounds stifled the Owls' offense in the opening 20 minutes, as they held them to six field goals (6-of-28) and 22 points.
In the second half, Assumption started fast, as they scored the first six points of the frame to go up 31-22. Southern Connecticut answered with a 9-3 run to get within three (34-31), but
Kyle Hicks and
Noah Payne recorded a 7-0 run, giving the Hounds' their largest lead of the game (41-31). The Owls once again responded, cutting the deficit to one (42-41), but Assumption would close the game on a 13-11 run to hold off Southern Connecticut for a 55-52 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lenny Tangishaka was the only player for the Greyhounds in double-figure in points.
- Southern Connecticut outrebounded Assumption 47-47, while the hosts outscored the opposition 34-22 in the paint.
- With 15 steals and five blocks, it is now five times this season that Assumption has recorded 10+ steals and five blocks.
- The Hounds held the Owls to their fewest points since Jan. 14, 2023, where New Haven held them to 51 points.
- The all-time series is now tied at 17-17.
