WORCESTER, Mass.—The Assumption University men's basketball team saw their bid for a Northeast-10 Conference Championship come to an end in the NE10 Quarterfinals, as Trey Alexander beat the buzzed with a turnaround setback gave Pace University a 74-72-win Sunday evening.
THE BASICS:
Score: Pace University 74, Assumption University 72
Records: Greyhounds (19-8, 14-6 NE10) | Setters (22-6, 14-6 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The back-and-forth quarterfinal began with a hot streak for the Greyhounds. They took an early 11-6 lead. Pace chipped away, and high defensive pressure caused key turnovers, which sent the Setters en route to fast and easy points. The Setters took their first lead, 12-11, after Darren Fergus went on a quick four-point run. Pace distanced themselves from Assumption the rest of the half and went into the intermission up 36-26.
Halftime adjustments were crucial for the Greyhounds on both sides of the ball. The Hounds limited their own turnovers while coming up with more steals and blocks than the Setters to inch their way back into the game. It started with Tayshawn Cunningham-Pemberton amplifying his play to challenge the Pace in the paint. Pemberton cashed in on the first five points of the half for Assumption.
Baril Mawo also stepped up with a clutch three-pointer, bringing the Greyhounds back to within one with 11:11 left.
Kyle Hicks put the Blue and White back on top with a layup to make it 49-48. The lead changed hands, with Pace retaking control minutes later. Tray Alexander put the Setters in front with 8:30 remaining. It was the final lead change. Assumption re-tied the game twice, including on a heroic corner-three from
Njavan Stewart with 6.4 seconds left in regulation. It was Pace with the final possession, seconds to go, 72-72. Alexander brought it up the court, and the whole building knew he would take the game-winning shot. The buzzer went off with the ball in the air, and Alexander's shot filled the cup, sending the Setters to the NE10 Semifinal.
