Women's Lacrosse's fourth-quarter rally sends Greyhounds past SCSU, 14-12

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's lacrosse team rallied with nine goals in the fourth quarter as the Greyhounds soared past Southern Connecticut State University 14-12 in Northeast-10 Conference action Monday evening at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption started fast, as Katelynn Johnston and Chloe Scornavacca found the back of the cage in the opening five minutes of the contest. Southern Connecticut responded with four straight to close out the first quarter before potting the first two to open the second to go up 6-2. Mallory Bartlett and Margaret Loeber stuck to close out the first half for the Hounds, sending the game to halftime with SCSU leading 6-4. 
 
In the third quarter, Southern Connecticut slowly pulled away as they outscored the hosts 3-1, to go up 9-5 through 45 minutes, with Loeber netting the only Assumption tally. The Greyhounds flipped the offensive switch in the fourth quarter, as they maintained possession for the opening 2:25 of the frame, as they scored three goals to get within one (9-8). The Owls bounced back with back-to-back tallies, but the Hounds went on a 6-1 run, including Molly Weiand giving the hosts a 13-12 lead with 3:09 showing on the game clock. Ava MacDonald added an insurance goal with 1:41, securing the 14-12 win for the Greyhounds.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Skylar Troyan recorded eight saves in the win.
  • Assumption outshot Southern Connecticut 37-27, while the Owls won 17-of-30 draw controls. 
  • The Greyhounds scored on four free-position goals, while SCSU had two. 
  • Margaret Loeber scored a career-high four goals, while Katelynn Johnston had three. 
  • Molly Weiand recorded a career-high six caused turnovers, which is tied for the most in the NE10 this season. 
  • In the fourth quarter, the Hounds outscored the Owls 9-3, outshooting them 19-3, and won 10-of-13 draw controls, while not recording a turnover. 
  • Assumption now leads the all-time series 20-3.
