WORCESTER, Mass.— The Assumption University men's soccer team opened its 2025 season with a win on home turf, taking down the College of Staten Island Dolphins 3-1 on Thursday afternoon at Normand R. Marois '57 Field.
THE BASICS:
Score: Assumption University 3, College of Staten Island 1
Records: Greyhounds (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NE10) | Dolphins (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ECC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first half was quiet for the opening 30 minutes. Each side fired just a couple shots on target, and forward momentum was proving hard to build. After a failed entry by Staten Island, space opened for an Assumption counterattack.
Axel Gerremo scorched a clearing ball through midfield, connecting with
Henrik Maehlum to give Maehlum a one-on-one against the Dolphins' keeper. With finesse, Maehlum flicked a soft shot over the reach of the keeper to open the scoring and capture the first Greyhound goal of 2025.
Staten Island responded with a goal at 57' by Koray Arslan, leveling the match at 1-1.
Just five minutes later, last season's leading scorer,
Cody Holbert, tallied his first of the season off an
Evan Conceicao pass to make it 2-1. On their next push,
Axel Gerremo made it 3-1 Hounds, scoring on a blast from inside the box setup nicely by
Ryan Linhares. Assumption held their ground to take the match 3-1.
