Fletcher lifts Men's Soccer past SCSU, 2-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Assumption University men's soccer team saw Evan Fletcher score the game-winning goal in the 90th minute as the Greyhounds best Southern Connecticut State University 2-1 in Northeast 10 Conference action, Saturday evening at Jess Dow Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption and Southern Connecticut State battled through a scoreless first half, with both teams recording four shots. Federico Foganio made two saves to keep the Owls off the scoreboard, while the Greyhounds earned three corner kicks but couldn't break through before halftime.
 
Southern Connecticut State opened the scoring in the 60th minute when Gisli Agustsson found the back of the net at 59:35 on an assist from Jimmy Choi. The goal gave the Owls a 1-0 advantage, forcing Assumption to play from behind.
 
The Greyhounds responded in the 74th minute when Cody Holbert netted his 11th goal of the season at 73:15, with Evan Conceicao providing the assist. Assumption continued to pressure the game throughout the second half, outshooting Southern Connecticut State 14-6 over the final 45 minutes.
 
With the contest looking like it would end in a draw, Evan Fletcher scored the game-winner with just 44 seconds remaining. Fletcher scored his fourth goal of the season at 89:16, completing the comeback and securing a dramatic 2-1 victory for the Greyhounds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Federico Foganio made two saves in the win. 
  • Assumption outshot Southern Connecticut State 8-3 and had eight corners to the hosts' four. 
  • The Owls were caught offside six times, while the Greyhounds were whistled twice. 
  • Cody Holbert scored his 11th goal of the year, tying him for the sixth most in program history and the most since Jason Lages had 11 in the 2019 campaign. 
  • Southern still leads the all-time series 19-7-2.
