Women's Lacrosse stings AIC, 16-5 in NE10 opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Assumption University women's lacrosse team opened up Northeast 10 Conference action with a 16-5 win over American International College, Wednesday afternoon at Brian Kelly '83 Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Assumption started fast, as Kyle Johnston opened the scoring 1:02 into the game, kick-starting a 10-0 run and seven points in the first quarter. The Greyhounds had five different players score on the run: Jillian Gillis, Mallory Bartlett, Aleigh Thompson, and Emily Abendroth all found the back of the cage. American International College got on the board with 4:17 left in the second quarter, as Gabrielle Walz potted the goal. The hosts answered with goals from Annika Pyy and Abendroth scoring in the final two minutes of the first half, giving the Blue and White a 12-1 lead at the intermission. 
 
Molly Trahan and Pyy opened the second half with goals, extending the Assumption edge to 14-1, but Walz would close out the third quarter with her second of the game. Walz would pick up the hat-trick for AIC, as she opened the fourth quarter. The Greyhounds answered with tallies from Sophia Riley and Clare O'Keefe, but the Yellow Jackets wrapped up the game with two scores by Kathryn Lettieri to make the final score 16-5. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grace Cashman and Madeleine Estes combined to record six saves in the win.   
  • Kyle Johnston led the way for the Greyhounds with three goals and two assists, with her second goal being number 100 in her career. 
  • Nine Hounds recorded multiple points, while 12 had at least one. 
  • Assumption outshot American International 36-17, while also winning 15-of-21 draw controls.
  • The Greyhounds were nearly perfect on clearing attempts, as they were 16-for-18, while the Yellow Jackets were 11-of-20. 
  • Assumption still leads the all-time series 23-7
