Softball knocks off No. 19 Franklin Pierce in NE10 Second Round, 7-6

RINDGE, N.H.—The Assumption University softball team used a four-run first inning to knock off the top-seeded Franklin Pierce University Ravens 7-6, in the Northeast 10 Conference Second Round, Tuesday afternoon at Melissa Bisaccia Field.

THE BASICS
Score: Assumption University 7, Franklin Pierce University 6
Records: Greyhounds (28-25, 21-15 NE10) | Ravens (40-9, 30-6 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Assumption started fast, as they were aggressive and plated five runs in the top of the first inning. Kaitlyn Cahill scored on an Emma Bloom sacrifice fly to right field, before Kaylee Lacomb crossed the plate on an error by the Franklin Pierce shortstop. Maddy Bland came around to score in the next at-bat, as Jaiden Tonucci reached first on a dropped strike three. Molly Green pushed the Greyhounds' advantage to 4-0 with an RBI single to right center field, plating Bella Mara on the play.  In the bottom of the first, the Ravens threatened with a runner on second with no outs, but the NE10 Co-Player of the Year, Camryn Van Valkenburgh, lined into a double play to Emma Bloom at short.

The Hounds added to their lead in the second inning, as Ella Leduc drove in Lacomb with a single to second base. The Blue and White would increase their lead to 6-0 after Tonucci scored on a Green sacrifice fly, following her leadoff triple to left. Franklin Pierce would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as Alicia Ott hit a grand slam to center field, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
Assumption answered in the top of the fourth inning, as the Greyhounds got a solo home run by Kaylee Lacomb, her second of the year. Franklin Pierce would not go away quietly, as they would answer with one run in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to get within one. The Ravens would get the game-winning run to the plate in the form of Delaney Duford with just one out in the inning, but she would fly out to the warning track, where Lacomb would collect the second out of the frame.
