Worcester, Mass. (November 22) -- The
Assumption College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has
taken part in a number of Food Drive initiatives over the first
semester leading up to the holidays, organizing events around both
Halloween and Thanksgiving as part of the group’s ongoing
community service efforts.
“The commitment of everybody involved and the involvement
of so many teams this year really meant a lot,” said senior
Shannon Ray, SAAC president and member of the
women’s basketball team. ”Being able to be involved in
this project thru SAAC is such a rewarding experience and
it’s great to be able to help people here in
Worcester.”
Shortly after Halloween, the student-athletes donated a record
1,600 pounds of food to the Worcester County Food Bank from their
Halloween “Trick-or-Treat” Collection. Student-athletes
went to neighborhoods in Worcester, Auburn, Holden and
Shrewsbury.
In addition to this Halloween drive, the Assumption athletic
teams held a Food Drive at the Senior Day football game and also
collected over $1,400 from athletic teams to go towards items and
gift cards (for turkeys) for the 30 Thanksgiving baskets that SAAC
donated this year thru Pernet Family Health Services.
“The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee did a great job of
engaging their teammates to help in our annual food drive
efforts,” said Bethany Ellis, associate
director of athletics and recreation. “They collected a
record-setting amount of food this year and it was great to see
them work together for such a good cause. I know that their efforts
will be appreciated by many families this winter.”
